Tangi Intervention Program #1
(TIP #1) - Ellena Lourens

At Tangi Street Art Festival, we're committed to making art a continuous part of our lives, like a never-ending river. That's the idea behind the Tangi Intervention Program. It's not just about one big festival each year; it's about having art all around us. We invite talented artists to paint the island's walls in between festivals. This way, our city becomes a living canvas that keeps changing and growing. Each mural is a new chapter in our community's story, and we want you to be a part of it.

In 2023, the Tangi Intervention Program was honoured to collaborate with South African artist, Ellena Lourens, as part of our mission to enrich Bali’s urban landscape with continuous artistic expression. Our paths serendipitously crossed while she was visiting the island, and we seized the opportunity to curate a vibrant intervention wall for her in one of Bali’s most high-visibility areas.

About

South African artist Elléna Lourens began her creative journey during her school years, working on personal and collaborative projects. Since then, she has delved into illustration, street art, painting, and embroidery. Her style beautifully echoes the past through ancient symbols, patterns, and color schemes, all while delivering a contemporary aesthetic that resonates and redefines emotional iconography. She's fully immersed in the creative world, collaborating with established artists, participating in exhibitions, and creating murals in South Africa and internationally.

The Wall in Mas, Ubud

Ellena’s mural found its home on a prominent wall in Mas, Ubud, a location that boasts thousands of daily passersby, ensuring her artwork would be seen and appreciated by a diverse audience. The location was perfect to merge the local culture of Ubud with Ellena's unique artistic style, creating a dialogue between tradition and modernity.

The Artistic Journey

Ellena spent two days meticulously working on her mural, pouring her energy and creativity into the wall. However, her journey was more than just about painting. She dedicated four days in total exploring Ubud and immersing herself in the surrounding culture, drawing inspiration from Bali’s rich artistic heritage. This cultural exchange is central to the Tangi Intervention Program, where artists from across the world come to Bali, not just to create, but to learn from and connect with the local community. Through this intervention, Ellena’s mural became a bridge between continents—fusing the visual aesthetics of South Africa and Bali into a single artistic expression that speaks to both local and international audiences.
