Ijal Mariachi

Is our artist line-up for Tangi Instervention Program 2023

Rizal Alvrianza, known professionally as Ijal Mariachi, is a visual artist born and raised in Bali. Since the age of eight, drawing has been a constant companion, shaping his lifelong creative path. His illustration style explores themes of gender, surrealism, and contemporary life. On public walls, Ijal develops character and perspective using vibrant primary colors to convey specific concepts, personalities, and emotions captured in moments of time. Beyond murals, he works in commercial and editorial illustration and participates actively in group exhibitions and collaborations with both local and international brands. Ijal describes his style as “psychedelic pop,” blending psychedelic elements with pop art sensibilities. His work is recognized for its boldness, energy, and inventive visual language, which draws viewers in while challenging conventional perspectives. Through his murals, Ijal creates immersive experiences that celebrate color, playfulness, and human connection, reflecting both personal expression and community engagement. His fearless approach to visual storytelling has established him as a standout figure in Bali’s contemporary street art scene.

Ijal Mariachi was one of the invited artists for the first edition of Tangi Street Art Festival, held from 1 May to 4 June 2023 under the theme “Paras Paros,” meaning “spirit of togetherness.” For this edition, each artist was given one week to work on their mural before the next artist began, creating a continuous and evolving street art experience. The festival aimed to use street art as a tool to inspire and uplift local youth, transforming public spaces into areas of shared creativity and dialogue. Ijal painted Social Connections, applying his signature psychedelic pop style to a vibrant wall in the heart of Bali. His mural encouraged reflection on human relationships, collaboration, and the collective spirit that binds communities. Through murals, workshops, and performances, the festival showcased the power of art to foster social connections, celebrate togetherness, and create meaningful cultural experiences across the community.

Ijal Mariachi’s mural Social Connections was inspired by the fundamental nature of humans as social beings. From families to workplaces, cooperation and shared effort are central to our survival and growth. His work reflects on how culture emerges from these group interactions, shaping norms, behaviors, and collective understanding. Through Social Connections, Ijal visualizes the bonds that unite communities and transcend individual differences. Using vibrant colors and dynamic forms, he captures the energy, emotions, and interdependence inherent in social life. His process involved observing human interactions, imagining the rhythm of connection, and translating it into a visual narrative that speaks to both personal and collective experience. The mural acts as a visual dialogue, inviting viewers to reflect on their own relationships and the shared emotions that define human society. It encourages engagement, understanding, and appreciation for collaboration and empathy. By embedding these themes in public space, Ijal hopes the artwork serves as a catalyst for community conversation, collective joy, and renewed recognition of the power of togetherness in overcoming challenges.
