Laura Devita

Is our artist line-up for Tangi Instervention Program 2024

Laura Devita is a street artist from Jambi, Sumatra, who began her urban art practice in 2022. Her work is distinguished by the use of female characters, representing the strength, creativity, and resilience of contemporary women. Through her murals, she celebrates empowerment, identity, and the role of women in society, blending bold visuals with meaningful narratives. Despite her relatively recent start, Laura has quickly gained recognition for her distinctive style and her ability to convey complex ideas through accessible, vibrant imagery. Her street art practice reflects a commitment to storytelling, emphasizing the connection between the individual, community, and environment. By placing female figures at the center of her work, she challenges conventional narratives and inspires viewers to recognize the power and creativity inherent in every person. Laura continues to develop her voice as an artist, exploring new mediums, collaborations, and public spaces to share her vision and amplify the role of women in contemporary urban art.

Laura Devita was one of the invited artists for Tangi Street Art Festival 2024. Held from May 13–19 in Desa Pancasari, Buleleng, the festival moved away from Bali’s coastal and urban highlights toward the island’s northern mountain region. With its cooler climate, lush green landscapes, and calm lakeside setting, Pancasari offered an inspiring backdrop for both artists and community. The 2024 edition carried the theme “SEKALA,” a Balinese concept referring to the tangible, visible world. Interpreted through murals, performances, and workshops, the theme encouraged artists to explore real forms of connection—between traditions and new expressions, locals and internationals, and individual creativity and collective experience. Laura’s participation added a fresh perspective, allowing her to share her vision of empowerment and inner strength while engaging with the local community and the festival’s collaborative environment.

Laura Devita’s first visit to Bali provided a rich source of inspiration for her mural. Her work focused on the concept of inner beauty—an illuminating force present in every individual. She emphasizes that acknowledging and nurturing one’s inner beauty opens pathways to connection with others and with nature. In her mural, these ideas are embodied through expressive female figures radiating strength, creativity, and positivity. During her time in Desa Pancasari, Laura engaged closely with local residents, observing daily life and the surrounding natural environment. This connection informed her work, helping her capture the harmonious balance between people and their surroundings. The mural reflects the idea that personal growth and self-recognition are intrinsically linked to community support and environmental care. By portraying inner beauty as a guiding light, Laura encourages viewers to cultivate compassion, mutual respect, and a sense of responsibility toward each other and the world around them. Her vibrant colors, dynamic compositions, and character-driven approach invite audiences to reflect on their own inner strengths while appreciating the broader interconnectedness of life.
